Turkesterone vs Ecdysterone: Research-Based Comparison with 12+ Studies [Updated 2024]

by Nader Qudimat
Updated December 30, 2023

Oh yes...

The battle of the ecdysteroids.

Turkesterone vs ecdysterone, which one is better?

Both of these are hyped up beyond any other natty anabolics.

And they are easily the popular natty supplements that have exploded with interest.

Ecdysterone is the better choice, easily.

We'll explain why...

Ecdysterone is the better choice simply because it has more evidence that it works.

Turkesterone is theorized to have more potent anabolic effects but the evidence is limited.

Both of these ecdysteroids are similar and can help increase muscle protein synthesis.

But they are made for advanced lifters because they are not as essential as creatine is.

Here's what makes Ecdysterone the better choice:

  • Ecdysterone has research published on its effects
  • More published reviews due to it being more popular

And what may make Turkesterone the better choice:

  • It may be more anabolic (but it's not proven yet)
  • Turkesterone is a derivative of ecdysterone

Neither of these ecdysteroids needs a PCT or anything that maintains organ health.

But it's recommended to be at least at an intermediate level with a few years of lifting experience because it'll make a difference when you reach a point where gains get slower.

If you were to take this as a beginner and made "noobie gains" you wouldn't know if it was just from training or with the help of turkesterone / ecdysterone.

The Evidence behind Ecdysterone

In order to fairly compare these two phytoecdysteroids, we'll need to look into the science.

Found in foods like spinach and quinoa, ecdysterone is a compound belonging to ecdysteroids and it's been demonstrated to have benefits for muscle building.

Ecdysterone works by being anabolic, without androgenic effects. [1, 2, 3]

Plants use cholesterol to create their own phytoecdysteroids. [4]

This is also how testosterone is also made, so that's something that plants and we have in common for growth. [5]

Ecdysterone is the main phytoecdysteroid found in Rhaponticum Carthamoids, which is where most research is done.

The summary is that phytoecdysteroids, such as ecdysterone, have anabolic properties by targeting estrogen receptor beta. [6, 7]

(Consider King Maker, which has both Turk and Ecdy)

According to a published human trial, binding ecdysterone to the estrogen receptor "ERβ", has resulted in increased hypertrophy of C2C12 cells, which means muscle cell growth and hypertrophy. [8]

Being able to bind to the estrogen receptor beta, can lead to increased muscle protein synthesis. [9, 10]

This all sounds great for bodybuilding and strength.

And while it's not banned by the WADA, researchers are actually recommending it to be on the list of WADA's banned substances. [11]

What About The Research on Turkesterone?

There was only one study performed on turkesterone, so we can still assume that ecdysterone is still the better option.

One study performed in 1998 by the Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences, researched used two preparations of turkesterone, derived from different parts of the A. turkestanica plant and performed against methandrostenolone, a form of the AAS dbol. [12]

The researchers found both sources of turkesterone were as potent as dbol with increasing body mass and organ size of the rats that used them. [12]

The paper above shows how turkesterone had greater anabolic effects than dbol. [12]

But unfortunately, the research is still new.

The set of studies is too small to conclude confidently that turkesterone actually works just as well as dbol.

And the rats that were used were actually sexually immature. [13]

So we may find that it works well for young athletes and not older ones.

Another negative side to the study is that the rats were sedentary.

Ecdysterone has better evidence for its effects and can easily be recommended over turkesterone.

What About The Research on Turkesterone?

Here's a comparison of the studies conducted on Ecdysterone and Turkesterone:

Ecdysterone Studies:

  1. A study published in PubMed suggests that the anabolic effect of ecdysterone, a naturally occurring steroid hormone, is mediated by estrogen receptor (ER) binding.

  2. Another research article titled "Ecdysteroids: A novel class of anabolic agents?" discusses the anabolic potency of ecdysterone compared to other well-characterized anabolic substances.

  3. A study titled "Practical uses for ecdysteroids in mammals including humans: an update" discusses the pharmacological effects of ecdysteroids on mammals.

Turkesterone Studies:

  1. While there are fewer human studies on Turkesterone, it's believed to aid in muscle protein synthesis, promoting the development of lean muscle mass.

  2. The study "Practical uses for ecdysteroids in mammals including humans: an update" also mentions the effects of Turkesterone on thymocyte energy metabolism.

Comparison:

The biggest difference between Turkesterone and Ecdysterone is that Ecdysterone has a successful human study, while Turkesterone does not. However, both Turkesterone and Ecdysterone are thought to facilitate muscle protein synthesis and increase lean muscle mass growth.

Turkesterone vs Ecdysterone Safety

According to research, there are yet to be adverse effects to be observed from phytoecdysteroid supplementation.

This means both turkesterone and ecdysterone are safe to use and they don't have any toxic effects. [14, 15, 16]

But remember, just because there aren't any noted adverse effects, it doesn't mean it's completely safe.

So be wise and use supplements that have third-party tests performed.

For example, NootropicsDepot found that many turkesterone supplements don't even have 1% of the promised amount on dozens of companies.

NootropicsDepot is a trusted company and they've published their findings on turkesterone supplements here.

Expert Opinions

  1. Lift Vault - According to Lift Vault, both Turkesterone and Ecdysterone are ecdysteroids and are not anabolic-androgenic steroids. They have similar benefits and neither have significant toxicity side effects. However, Turkesterone may be slightly more anabolic.

  2. Transparent Labs - Transparent Labs points out that while the benefits of Turkesterone and Ecdysterone are encouraging, there's a concerning lack of regulation and quality in supplements containing these compounds. A recent analysis of supplements containing ecdysterone found that many samples were significantly less potent than the label claimed.

  3. Fitness Volt - Fitness Volt discusses the Turkesterone vs. Ecdysterone debate in detail, including their benefits, side effects, and similarities. They also provide information on the best Turkesterone and Ecdysterone supplements on the market.

  4. Testosterone.org - Testosterone.org provides a detailed comparison of Ecdysterone and Turkesterone, discussing which of these ecdysteroids is best for getting bigger and stronger.

  5. Dr. Axe - Dr. Axe explains that Turkesterone is a bioactive compound found in certain thistle-like plants that grow in Central Asia. It has a long history of use in traditional medicine for its anabolic and adaptogenic effects. Turkesterone is similar to ecdysterone because both are natural phytoecdysteroids.

Just a heads up:

While these expert insights are super valuable, we're still scratching the surface when it comes to fully understanding Turkesterone and Ecdysterone.

So, what's the bottom line?

More research is on the horizon.

And remember, before you jump into any new supplement routine, it's always a smart move to touch base with your healthcare provider. Safety first, right?

Not only does it have published human studies but it also has far more reviews across the web about its benefits.

It's the best of the ecdysteroids.

When it comes to ecdysteroids, you can also consider Sapogenix.

And these supplements are considered to be the legal steroids of supplements.

If you're looking for well-researched phytoecdysteroids, then ecdysterone is the wiser choice, as it has more evidence than turkesterone.
