How Citrulline Works

Citrulline raises arginine availability, which feeds the nitric-oxide pathway, which underpins the vasodilation and blood-flow rationale behind every pump product on the shelf.

The reason it's the default isn't that the mechanism is exciting — it's that citrulline has been studied in the actual context people use it in. Resistance training, pre-workout timing, doses a real formula can contain.

Glycerol does something entirely different: it draws and holds water. It's an osmolyte, and its established use is hyperhydration — increasing fluid retention before exercise.

That's why combining the two isn't redundant. One works on blood flow, the other on fluid volume. They're not two versions of the same idea.

Citrulline: more directly applicable evidence, the nitric-oxide pathway, a mainstream resistance-training context, and research amounts close to what a properly formulated pre-workout can realistically contain.

A 2021 meta-analysis reported a small ergogenic effect of acute citrulline malate on repetition performance during high-intensity strength training — on the order of about three additional weighted repetitions on average across the included studies. Small, but real, and measured in the right setting.

The larger 2026 review is the one that should set expectations. Across 30 randomized trials and 644 participants it found a small pooled exercise-performance effect (g = 0.16), with wide uncertainty, low-to-very-low GRADE certainty and no reliable dose or timing subgroup winner.

So this page won't claim guaranteed extra reps, guaranteed bigger pumps, that 8 g always works, or that citrulline malate converts gram-for-gram across every raw-material ratio. Citrulline is the better-supported default, and "better-supported" here still means a small effect with real uncertainty around it.

What glycerol doesn't get here is a dismissal. The point isn't that it has no pump value — it's that the evidence for visible bodybuilding pumps at typical pre-workout powder amounts is less direct.

The Australian Institute of Sport describes glycerol as an osmotic agent used with fluid for pre-exercise hyperhydration. A 2023 systematic review found hyperhydration can increase plasma volume and may improve constant-work-rate exercise capacity — with variable effects and commonly reported gastrointestinal symptoms across the literature.

That's a real, useful, well-defined role. It's just a different one from what most people are buying a pump product for.

The crucial context
Why Water Matters More With Glycerol

To be explicit: those figures are evidence context, not a dosing instruction. Don't go and drink 100 g of glycerol because a comparison article mentioned a number.

The reason it matters is a labelling one. "Clinically dosed" shouldn't be stamped beside a low-dose powdered glycerol just because glycerol research exists somewhere. And glycerol without the fluid context misses the mechanism most of its research is built around — the water is not an optional extra, it's half the protocol.

⚠ The dose gap nobody mentions

Classic effective hyperhydration protocols run roughly 1.2–1.4 g/kg bodyweight of glycerol with about 25 mL/kg of fluid, taken 90–180 minutes before exercise. For a 75 kg athlete that's around 90–105 g of glycerol and close to two litres of fluid. A pre-workout containing a few grams of glycerol powder is not reproducing that protocol.

This is the single most useful practical skill on this topic, and almost nobody applies it.

Grams of glycerol powder is not grams of active glycerol. Branded glycerol powders are standardized to a percentage. Glanbia describes HydroMax as a 65% glycerol powder, and NNB describes HydroPrime as 65% glycerol by weight.

So 3 g of a 65% branded material is roughly 2 g of actual glycerol. If a label lists the branded material rather than the active glycerol, check the standardization before comparing doses between products — otherwise you're comparing two different things.

Do the same on the citrulline side. Comparing "8 g" against "8 g" is meaningless if one is pure L-citrulline and the other is citrulline malate, where malate makes up part of that weight.

Yes, conceptually. They're not duplicate ingredients — citrulline works on nitric oxide and blood flow, glycerol on fluid retention and hydration. A formula can reasonably use both.

But stacking two ingredients isn't automatically better than one well-dosed ingredient. A formula with a well-supported citrulline amount can be a stronger pump-focused design than one that underdoses citrulline simply to add a token glycerol dose. Compare the exact citrulline form and the active glycerol yield rather than ingredient count alone.
