In order for an athlete to get stronger, they must train with maximal force. 
Strength workouts can also increase muscle size and cause hypertrophy. 
If your main goal is to get bigger, then you can look at bodybuilding or powerbuilding programs. 
Compared to powerlifting, strength training will use low rep sets, while powerlifting will generally focus on 1 rep sets on the main compound lifts.
