Transparent Labs
Personally tested
Transparent Labs Casein mixed much thicker than whey and felt closer to food than a normal shake. I tested one full Chocolate serving in water before bed, after having used the product previously.
The useful distinction is format. Casein works when I want a slow-to-drink, substantial protein snack. For ordinary convenience, I still prefer whey.
Confidence: useful firsthand observation; low confidence for attributing next-morning hunger specifically to casein.
Choose whey for convenience and a normal shake. Choose casein when the thicker format is the reason you want it. Owning both is optional.
Pre-sleep protein can support overnight protein synthesis. This study does not show that the protein needs to be casein.
In a randomized trial of 36 young men after evening endurance exercise, 45g whey and 45g casein produced different amino-acid timing but no significant difference in overnight myofibrillar or mitochondrial protein synthesis.
Both protein conditions performed better than placebo when pooled. Hunger and breakfast energy intake also did not differ by treatment.
Broader reviews support pre-sleep protein as a useful way to reach daily protein targets, but evidence for a special casein-only muscle or appetite advantage remains limited.
I wouldn't use it in yogurt again—it became too thick for me.
FitFrek Score
The current Nutrition Facts panel lists 1g added sugar, so FitFrek follows the label rather than the conflicting “no added sugars” product-description claim.
You want protein pudding, thicker oatmeal, or an evening snack that feels more substantial than a normal shake.
You already hit your protein target with whey and food, or you prefer thin shakes and maximum flavor variety.
Start with one scoop in 10–12 oz of water or milk and adjust slowly; casein thickens fast. For pudding or oatmeal, add liquid in small amounts until the texture is right.
Transparent Labs Casein is a high-quality, well-tested protein with genuinely useful texture. Its premium price and narrow purpose keep it from being essential.
You’re not buying a proven edge for muscle growth. You’re buying a different way to eat protein.
Not for a proven muscle-growth advantage. Both can support overnight protein synthesis when they help you reach an adequate daily protein intake.
I woke up less hungry after one deliberate test, but I also ate more that evening and did not run a whey-control night, so casein cannot be credited confidently.
Its thick, food-like texture works well in pudding, oatmeal, and substantial evening snacks.
The current Chocolate Nutrition Facts panel lists 3g total sugar including 1g added sugar.
Usually not for muscle growth. Own both only if you value casein's different texture and practical uses.
