Caffeine has consistently improved exercise performance at ~3–6 mg/kg, while lower 2–3 mg/kg doses may give comparable resistance-exercise benefits with fewer side effects. FDA cites 400 mg/day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most healthy adults — not a required target or a guarantee of safety.

Which one feels stronger?

DMAA is generally regarded as the more aggressive stimulant, but there is no standardized, safe human comparison that allows a clean potency conversion. The stronger subjective effect does not make it the better performance ingredient.

Which one has better exercise evidence?

Caffeine, clearly. Its ergogenic effects are supported by a large body of human research and sports-nutrition position stands. DMAA's exercise evidence is weak and inadequate — it was popularized in products, not established through performance research.

What do the small human DMAA studies actually show?

The limited human research isn't completely one-sided, and it's fairer to show all of it.

A small single-dose study found that 25 mg DMAA produced little meaningful change in resting heart rate, blood pressure or body temperature. Another small study found that 50 mg and 75 mg increased blood pressure and cardiovascular workload, with the largest response when the higher DMAA amount was combined with caffeine.

A longer intervention study in healthy young men did not find significant changes in its measured safety markers at the amount tested. However, that study was small, limited to a narrow population and partly supported by USPlabs, the company connected to DMAA products.

Taken together, these studies do not establish a generally safe DMAA dose, and they don't address uncertain product purity, larger amounts, stimulant combinations or long-term use in broader populations.

Blood pressure and cardiovascular risk

A controlled study found that DMAA alone, and DMAA combined with caffeine, increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure and rate-pressure product. That makes "DMAA plus caffeine" a safety concern — not an advanced performance stack to recommend.

Caffeine can also produce a temporary blood-pressure increase, particularly in caffeine-naive or hypertensive users, but its human evidence base and risk profile are far better characterized.


Can DMAA and caffeine be combined?

Not a combination to pursue. Controlled research found greater cardiovascular strain when DMAA and caffeine were used together. FitFrek does not provide a stacking protocol for this.

Is the "natural geranium" claim real?

FDA is not aware of reliable evidence showing that DMAA occurs naturally in geranium plants. "Geranium extract" on a label should not be treated as proof that DMAA is natural.

DMAA is not a natural geranium stimulant, not simply a plant extract, not just a stronger form of caffeine, and not safe merely because a related compound history exists.

Is DMAA legal? Drug testing and WADA status

Caffeine: lawful in supplements, widely used in foods and beverages, not WADA-prohibited in 2026, and included in WADA's monitoring program.

DMAA: not a dietary ingredient according to FDA; DMAA supplement products are illegal in the United States; no currently recognized medical use; and WADA-prohibited in competition in 2026.

Caffeine is safer — not side-effect free

Caffeine can still cause insomnia, anxiety, restlessness, palpitations, temporary blood-pressure increases, gastrointestinal discomfort, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms. Risk depends on dose, individual sensitivity, timing, other caffeine sources and health conditions.

The FDA's 400 mg-per-day reference is a general guideline for most healthy adults — not a target and not a guarantee of safety.

The sports-performance range and the FDA's general daily reference are different frameworks. A bodyweight-based serving of 3–6 mg/kg can exceed 400 mg for a larger athlete, so the research range shouldn't be treated as an automatic personal target.

Who needs extra caution with caffeine?

FitFrek recommends avoiding DMAA entirely rather than trying to identify a supposedly safe user group. For caffeine, take extra care with:

  • Pregnancy
  • Heart rhythm problems
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Panic or severe anxiety sensitivity
  • Serious sleep problems
  • Prescription stimulants or cardiovascular medications without clinician guidance
  • A personal note on bulk stimulants

    Years ago, an unmeasured amount of bulk DMAA caused severe jitteriness, anxiety and the feeling that something was seriously wrong. That experience is one reason I no longer treat bulk stimulant powders or improvised stimulant combinations casually.

    This isn't a close call. Caffeine is legal, well studied, and has real evidence-based performance dosing. DMAA is not a lawful dietary ingredient, has no established safe dose, and carries cardiovascular risk that gets worse when it's stacked with caffeine.
