DMBA is a close structural analogue of DMAA with one fewer carbon in its molecular formula. A 2015 paper identified DMBA in supplements and described it as a synthetic stimulant that had not been tested in humans. Later analyses continued finding DMBA and other experimental stimulants in sports and weight-loss supplements.

Effects, stimulant strength and human evidence

DMAA: limited acute human studies, some pharmacokinetic data, can increase blood pressure, and serious adverse events have been reported in association with DMAA-containing products. FDA says it is not a dietary ingredient.

DMBA: appeared in supplements after DMAA enforcement increased, with no established human performance benefit, no established safe dose, and human cardiovascular risk that can't be quantified reliably. Its similarity to DMAA does not prove identical strength, duration or safety.

No controlled human trial establishes DMBA's performance effects, duration, cardiovascular response or safe dose.

What this page will not say: that DMBA is "weaker DMAA," "safer DMAA," "smoother," "less crash," or that it "replaced DMAA successfully" — and no milligram conversion between the two.

Historical firsthand note

Years ago, I used a bulk stimulant sold as AMP citrate/DMBA. Compared with DMAA, it felt more physically aggressive and training-oriented to me, while DMAA felt harsher and more vasoconstrictive. The perceived AMP citrate effect also seemed to fade quickly with repeated use.

This was an unverified bulk stimulant used in mixed pre-workout contexts. I can't confirm its purity, exact exposure or whether DMBA alone caused those effects. This is personal history — not human safety evidence, a dose recommendation or a reason to use either ingredient.

Blood pressure and cardiovascular risks
DMAA has been shown to raise blood pressure, and DMAA-containing products have been associated with serious adverse events. For DMBA, the honest position is that human cardiovascular risk can't be reliably quantified — which is a reason for caution, not reassurance. "Unstudied" is not "safe."
Is DMBA naturally found in Pouchung tea?

There's no reliable evidence that the supplement stimulant was naturally supplied by Pouchung tea.

Researchers analyzing authentic and commercial tea samples did not detect DMBA, while several supplements labeled with DMBA or related plant-source language contained measurable synthetic stimulant amounts.

A tea reference on a label should therefore not be treated as proof that DMBA is naturally occurring.

What did supplement testing find?

A 2015 analysis detected DMBA in 12 of 14 supplements, with large variation between products. A separate analysis found DMBA in 11 of 13 tested supplements but did not find it in the tea samples examined.

These were analytical studies, not human safety or performance trials. They show DMBA was sold in supplements and that product amounts varied widely — not that any amount was safe or effective.

Why DMBA appeared after DMAA
After FDA enforcement against DMAA increased, DMBA began appearing in supplements as a closely related replacement stimulant. DMAA had become prominent in pre-workouts and weight-loss products; FDA enforcement established it isn't a lawful dietary ingredient; DMBA / AMP citrate then appeared, and FDA sent warning letters concerning DMBA products in April 2015. Both remain relevant to supplement adulteration and drug-testing concerns, and both are prohibited in competition under the 2026 WADA list.
FDA, U.S. legal status and WADA
In the United States, FDA does not accept DMAA as a dietary ingredient. FDA treated DMBA-containing supplements as adulterated because the required new-dietary-ingredient conditions were not met. They reach a similar practical conclusion, but FDA's stated regulatory basis is not identical for the two substances. Both are prohibited stimulants in competition under the 2026 WADA Prohibited List.
Final verdict
There's no version of this comparison that ends in a recommendation. DMAA has limited research and real cardiovascular and regulatory problems; DMBA has even less human evidence. Both present serious U.S. dietary-supplement compliance problems, although FDA's stated regulatory basis is not identical for the two substances.
