Quick verdict
Main difference The caffeine is almost identical — 325mg in Bulk Black vs 320mg active in Total War. What separates them is everything around the caffeine: Bulk Black has a much deeper focus/performance stack, while Total War is a simpler formula built on caffeine, citrulline, beta-alanine, taurine and agmatine.
Choose Bulk Black You want better focus, stronger overall performance dosing, and the better experience from my testing.
Choose Total War You want a cheaper, straightforward high-caffeine pre-workout and don't care about the extra nootropic ingredients.
Bottom line Bulk Black is the better pre-workout overall. Total War is the better budget option.

*Scoop weight varies by flavor. Don't treat flavor-dependent serving grams as a formula advantage — the active formula can stay the same while the powder weight shifts by flavor. Formula rows come from each product's current official Supplement Facts panel.
My firsthand testing
The caffeine is nearly a tie, so the experience is where they split.

Here's what makes this comparison worth reading: on paper the caffeine is basically equal, and Total War's panel looks perfectly reasonable. But in my testing the two felt like different classes of product — and not in the direction the labels suggest.

The clearest evidence is the Total War side, where a sensible-looking formula produced a much rougher session than expected.

Ingredients & dosing
Winner · Bulk Black

Bulk Black has the more complete formula. Total War covers the basics, but Bulk Black adds considerably more support for focus and overall training performance. Rather than walk every ingredient, here are the doses that matter.

Pumps
BULK BLACK: 8g Citrulline Malate
TOTAL WAR: 8g Citrulline Malate | + 1g Agmatine Sulfate

Endurance
BULK BLACK: 4g Beta-Alanine | + 2.5g Betaine
TOTAL WAR: 3.2g Beta-Alanine | + 1g Taurine
Focus — the clearest win
BULK BLACK: 2g L-Tyrosine | 300mg AlphaSize Alpha-GPC 50% · 200mg L-Theanine · 200mcg Huperzine A

TOTAL WAR: No comparable dedicated nootropic stack | on its current label

Total War isn't weak for pumps — agmatine is a real second pump ingredient — but Bulk Black keeps a slight edge on the higher citrulline dose and the broader formula. Focus is where it isn't close.

Energy & focus: what they actually feel like
Winner · Bulk Black

Bulk Black
Controlled: Doesn't feel chaotic despite the caffeine.
Focused: Stronger mental engagement and training drive.
Gradual: Energy comes down more naturally instead of feeling abrupt.
Usable: Strong enough to matter, but still feels like a conventional performance pre-workout rather than an exotic stim.

Total War
Hard caffeine feel: Felt much more like raw stimulation in my testing.
Rougher: I noticed anxiety, jitteriness and an elevated heart rate.
Less useful focus: The stimulation was more obvious than the cognitive lift.
Still functional: It gave me energy — I just didn't like the quality of it.
In my testing, Total War felt much rougher than the ingredient panel would suggest — more anxiety, jitteriness and heart-rate stimulation. I'm not attributing that to an undeclared ingredient; that's simply how the product felt to me.
Pumps & training performance

Winner · Bulk Black (Total War competitive)

Bulk Black gets the overall performance edge because it gives you more citrulline and beta-alanine and adds 2.5g betaine.

Total War still has a respectable base. Six grams of citrulline malate plus 1g agmatine is a real pump stack, and 3.2g beta-alanine isn't a token dose. This is a Bulk Black win — not a Total War failure.

Pump support

BULK BLACK: 8g citrulline malate

TOTAL WAR: 6g citrulline malate | + 1g agmatine
Endurance support

BULK BLACK: 4g beta-alanine | + betaine

TOTAL WAR: 3.2g beta-alanine | + taurine
Formula style, caffeine & value

Caffeine is essentially a tie. Bulk Black has 325mg; Total War has 320mg active caffeine. Five milligrams is irrelevant in practical terms — so "Bulk Black is stronger because it has more caffeine" is the wrong explanation. The formula quality and your actual experience are what separate them.

Caffeine forms

BULK BLACK: PurCaf Organic Caffeine | 325mg

TOTAL WAR: 250mg anhydrous + 100mg di-caffeine malate | (providing 70mg) = 320mg active
Formula philosophy

BULK BLACK: Natural flavoring/sweetening | full nootropic layer, larger performance formula, no artificial sweeteners/dyes, third-party tested

TOTAL WAR: Conventional flavor system | simpler formula; current label includes sucralose + acesulfame potassium

Think of it as a natural-ingredient preference vs a conventional flavor system — not "clean vs dirty."

Price & value
Winner · Total War

Total War is the value play when its tracked price is meaningfully lower. Bulk Black costs more, but it also gives you considerably more in the focus/performance part of the formula. The value winner is decided by current best-price data, not MSRP.

3.2g beta-alanine

Who should choose each?
Choose Bulk Black if
  • You want the better product overall
  • You care about focus, not just stimulation
  • You want the more complete performance formula
  • You prefer products without artificial sweeteners/dyes
  • You tolerate ~300mg+ caffeine well
  • You're okay paying more
Choose Total War if
  • Price is important
  • You primarily want straightforward energy
  • You still want respectable pump/endurance dosing
  • You don't care about Alpha-GPC, tyrosine, theanine or huperzine
  • You prefer a simpler formula

Neither is a beginner pre-workout.

Final verdict
# Bulk Black is my pick overall.
# The interesting part is that caffeine doesn't explain the difference. Bulk Black has 325mg and Total War has 320mg active caffeine — they're essentially identical there.
# What changes the experience is the rest of the formula. Bulk Black has more citrulline, more beta-alanine, betaine and a dedicated focus stack built around tyrosine, Alpha-GPC, theanine and huperzine A.
# Total War is simpler and cheaper. It still gives you a legitimate 6g citrulline + 1g agmatine pump setup and 3.2g beta-alanine, so it isn't an underdosed product.
# But in my testing, Total War felt much rougher — more jittery, more anxious and more like a caffeine hit — while Bulk Black felt considerably more controlled.
# Buy Bulk Black for the better overall pre-workout. Buy Total War if saving money matters more than having the deeper formula.

FAQ
Does Bulk Black have more caffeine than Total War?
Only slightly. Bulk Black has 325mg per its current Supplement Facts, while Total War has 320mg active caffeine. That five-milligram difference isn't the reason they feel different.
Does Bulk Black contain Nitrosigine?
No. The current Bulk Black Supplement Facts panel does not list Nitrosigine. Some older or third-party pages still associate it with Bulk Black, so check the current formula rather than relying on older descriptions.
Which has better pumps?
Bulk Black gets the slight overall edge with 8g citrulline malate and 2.5g betaine. Total War is still competitive with 6g citrulline malate plus 1g agmatine.
Which is better for focus?
Bulk Black. It has 2g tyrosine, AlphaSize Alpha-GPC, 200mg theanine and 200mcg huperzine A. Total War has no comparable dedicated nootropic stack on its current label.
Which is cheaper?
Check the current live price above — it changes. Total War is generally the value-oriented choice when its tracked price is substantially lower.
Do either contain creatine?
No, not in the current formulas being compared.
Why do the serving sizes vary?
Because flavor systems change the total powder weight. The active formula can stay the same while the scoop weight shifts slightly by flavor — so serving grams aren't a winner metric.
Which one did I prefer?
Bulk Black. Total War produced energy, but my firsthand testing was more jittery, anxious and heart-rate-heavy.
